Student Representatives: Call for Applications

A final message from your Student Representatives, Mariano and Ann-Christin: With our time as your EPSA representatives having drawn to a close, we are looking for two new representatives who will continue to advocate for the interests of EPSA’s junior scholar community. While Ann-Christin is running again, we would also very much like to encourage other junior scholars to apply for the position so that the election offers a strong and diverse field of candidates.

During the last two years we were able to successfully carry on our work with the Steering Committee, such as an informal meeting in a bar during EPSA2025 that attracted a lot of you – including fun conversations or travel funds for EPSA 2025. Moreover, we launched several new initiatives of our own, including the organization of the Thriving as a Junior Scholar Online Series last summer.

These events not only facilitated meaningful exchanges between junior scholars, but also provided valuable opportunities for collaboration within the philosophical community. We warmly invite all those who held student status during the EPSA2025 conference and who are interested in providing help and support to the EPSA junior scholar community to apply for the EPSA Student Representative positions. As Student Reps you will be able to propose new initiatives, help carry on existing projects, represent the interests of PhD students and junior scholars (broadly construed), and convey any questions, comments, and other forms of feedback from junior scholars to the Steering Committee. Please note that it is *not* required for applicants to hold student status for the entire two-year duration of the Student Representative position.

Your application should contain your name, current affiliation, and a short (up to 150 words) bio mentioning any activities/initiatives that you would like to put forward as the next EPSA Student Rep. Please send your applications directly to: epsa.studentreps@philsci.eu

You can submit your application until 13 March 2026.

The next two EPSA Student Representatives will be elected in online voting which will be held after the list of applicants is closed.

EPSA27, EPSA29 and more!

In our first newsletter of 2026, we want to announce some good news and update you on some recent developments pertaining to EPSA.

The good news is that we have now secured locations not only for EPSA27 but also for EPSA29! We were very lucky this year to receive nothing less than four bids to host EPSA27; all bids were very strong and carefully prepared, and the Steering Committee found it very difficult to decide.

Eventually, we settled on Warsaw, Poland, for 2027 (with Marcin Milkowski and Hajo Greif as co-chairs) and Ljubljana, Slovenia, for 2029 (with Borut Trpin as chair). More details will follow in due course, but for now, we can all be happy that the next two EPSAs are in good hands and will take place in splendid locations!

This is also a good moment to thank the Steering Committee members who have concluded their term (Lilia Gurova, Federica Russo, Marcel Weber, Catherine Herfeld, Edouard Machery and Caterina Marchionni) and in particular my predecessor Stéphanie Ruphy as EPSA President. Thanks to their good work, the current Steering Committee has found EPSA to be in excellent shape, which will allow us to continue to serve the philosophy of science community in Europe in constructive ways.

We also want to thank Dunja Šešelja and Mathias Frisch, who have completed their terms as Editors-in-Chief of the European Journal for Philosophy of Science, and to welcome Samuel Fletcher and Catherine Herfeld as the new Editors-in-Chief of EJPS.

Speaking of EJPS, we will soon be announcing the Call for Papers for the Proceedings of EPSA25, with Julie Jebeile as guest editor for the Proceedings (plus a team of co-editors to be announced shortly).

Don't forget to follow us at: https://bsky.app/profile/epsaphilsci.bsky.social

Catarina Dutilh Novaes and the EPSA Steering Committee

EPSA27 Venue - Call for Bids

The European Philosophy of Science Association calls for proposals for the venue of EPSA27, its 11th Biennial Conference, to be held in 2027. The biennial conference is the main scientific event of the EPSA, attracting philosophers of science from across the world. Its most recent instantiation, EPSA25 in Groningen, had circa 300 contributed and symposia talks, organized in as many as eight different sections, and taking place in up to nine parallel sessions. The number of participants was circa 460. A selection of papers from the conference will be published as a special edition of the European Journal for Philosophy of Science.

The conference is typically hosted by a philosophy of science unit, and its venue must be a recognized European academic or research institution. The event takes place over a period of 3-4 days in alternating years to the conference of the Philosophy of Science Association (PSA). Past conferences have taken place in Madrid (2007), Amsterdam (2009), Athens (2011), Helsinki (2013), Düsseldorf (2015), Exeter (2017), Geneva (2019), Turin (2021), Belgrade (2023) and Groningen (2025).

A Local Organizing Committee (LOC) is set up at the host institution -- with a remit to organize the event itself. About one year in advance, the Steering Committee (SC) of the EPSA puts out a call for papers and selects a Programme Committee (PC) comprising distinguished philosophers of science. The LOC, SC, and PC are non-overlapping sets of people, with the exception of the Chairs of the LOC and PC, who may be drawn from the SC.

Proposals (one PDF document) should be submitted to the President of the Association (Prof. Catarina Dutilh Novaes | email: epsa@philsci.eu) by December 10, 2025 and must include the following:

The name of the organizing unit or research institution.

The name of the academic or research institute hosting the event.

The proposed dates (expected to be between end of August and end of November 2025).

The names of the members of the LOC, including Chair(s) and/or Deputy (please note that the members of the LOC have to be EPSA members).

The CV of the Chair(s) of the LOC.

An estimated budget proposal, including rough estimates for the following expenses: a) building and facilities, b) catering, c) conference registration packs (200 delegates minimum), d) personnel, e) expected financial contribution by the host institution and/or a funding agency.

Steering Committee Elections 2025 - Call for Nominations

The EPSA is a thriving learned society that seeks to promote and advance the study of philosophy of science in Europe. To keep it thriving, it is important to have an active and committed Steering Committee. Around mid-July/mid-August 2025, members of the EPSA will be asked to elect a new President and six new regular members of the Steering Committee.

To prepare for the elections, we are seeking nominations for the various offices. EPSA members are invited to propose candidates for the roles of:

2. Steering Committee Officer (6 open positions)

The composition of the Steering Committee of EPSA should reflect the diversity (demographic, geographic, thematic) of its members.

Nominations should be sent to the EPSA email address: epsa@philsci.eu.

The deadline for nominations is 18 June 2025.

Both nominators and nominees must be active EPSA members. (Join or renew membership here)

The Nomination Committee will produce a list of up to three candidates for President and up to eighteen candidates for the Ordinary Members.

[Deadline extension] Call for Applications: Editor-in-Chief, European Journal for Philosophy of Science

The Steering Committee of the European Philosophy of Science Association (EPSA) seeks applications for the position of Editor-in-Chief of the European Journal for Philosophy of Science (EJPS). The editorship will be assumed during autumn 2025 and is held for a renewable term of four years.

The European Journal for Philosophy of Science was founded in 2009 and the first issue was published in 2011. The journal currently publishes four issues per year + several topical collections. The Editor-in-Chief (or co-Editors-in-Chief) is responsible for selecting manuscripts for publication, supervising the editorial office, and coordinating the production of the journal with the publisher Springer. The Editor-in-Chief must hold a permanent academic appointment at a European University and have a distinguished research record in philosophy of science.

Applications for the Editor-in-Chief of the European Journal for Philosophy of Science should summarize the applicant’s qualifications for the editorship, present the proposed editorial team (currently the journal has two Editors-in-Chief and ten Associate Editors, but other arrangements are also possible), and describe the likely institutional support, such as teaching relief and administrative assistance. Applications from outside of Europe are welcome, but at least half of the editorial team (i.e. Editors-in-Chief and Associate Editors) should have a position in Europe. If two Editors-in-Chief are proposed, at least one of them should have a permanent appointment at a European university. The application should also include the affiliations and areas of expertise of all members of the proposed editorial team.

Over the years, EJPS has established a commitment to inclusive editing (https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s13194-024-00616-2). We invite applicants to set out their vision for the journal, outlining how they plan to uphold and further advance EJPS' dedication to inclusive editing.

Please submit applications by e-mail attachment to the secretary of EPSA at epsa@philsci.eu.
Student Representatives - Call for Applications

A final message from your Student Representatives, Bobby and Stéphanie: With our time as your EPSA representatives having drawn to a close, we are looking for two new representatives who will continue to advocate for the interests of EPSA’s junior scholar community.

During the last two years we were able to successfully carry on, in collaboration with the Steering Committee, the EPSA Fellowship Programme (facilitating research visits for Eastern-European scholars at academic institutes across Europe) and the Mentoring Scheme (enabling junior scholars to receive support in a variety of academic-related matters). Moreover, we launched several new initiatives of our own, including:

the organization of online social gatherings in the leadup to the EPSA2023 conference,

the revitalization of the “Philosophy of Science in Europe” newsletter,

a PhD students' round table during EPSA2023,

a dedicated section on the EPSA website for PhD student portraits,

an informal meeting in a bar during EPSA2023 that attracted around 50 participants.

These events not only facilitated meaningful exchanges between junior scholars, but also provided valuable opportunities for collaboration within the philosophical community.

Lastly, the Steering Committee has agreed to the organization of an academic event centred on highlighting the plurality of intellectual traditions in philosophy of science in Europe, on which Bobby will continue to work with the Steering Committee in the months to come (further details TBA in the near future).

We warmly invite all those who held student status during the EPSA23 conference and who are interested in providing help and support to the EPSA junior scholar community to apply for the EPSA Student Representative positions.

Please send your applications directly to epsa.studentreps@philsci.eu

You can submit your application until Thursday 8 February 2024.

The next two EPSA Student Representatives will be elected in online voting which will be held after the list of applicants is closed.

EPSA25 Venue - Call for Bids

The European Philosophy of Science Association calls for proposals for the venue of EPSA25, its 10th Biennial Conference, to be held in the autumn of 2025. The biennial conference is the main scientific event of the EPSA, typically attracting 200-300 philosophers of science from across the world. It usually comprises 200 contributed and symposia talks, organized in as many as eight different sections, and taking place in five or six parallel sessions. A selection of papers from the conference will be published as a special edition of the European Journal for Philosophy of Science.

The conference is typically hosted by a philosophy of science unit, and its venue must be a recognized European academic or research institution. The event takes place in the autumn over a period of 3-4 days in alternating years to the conference of the Philosophy of Science Association (PSA). Past conferences have taken place in Madrid (2007), Amsterdam (2009), Athens (2011), Helsinki (2013), Düsseldorf (2015), Exeter (2017), Geneva (2019) and Turin (2021). EPSA23 will take place in Belgrade, Serbia.

Stéphanie Ruphy | email: epsa@philsci.eu) by November 15, 2023 and must include the following:

The name of the organizing unit or research institution.

The name of the academic or research institute hosting the event.

The proposed dates in the autumn of 2025 (expected to be a long weekend between end of August and end of November 2025).

Ukraine: a statement of the Steering Committee of EPSA

(updated on 17 Mar 2022 11:15)

The Steering Committee of EPSA stands, together with other academic societies and scholarly organisations, and the academic world at large, in support of the suffering people of Ukraine and their families and friends all over Europe and elsewhere. We also express our support to Russian colleagues who oppose the war, often at great personal risk.

Scientific research is only possible through collaborations with our colleagues from across the globe, thereby building on a mutual commitment to and belief in universal human rights, dignity and equality. EPSA will always strive for a plural and diversified research community, which is committed to those values. We reiterate the critical role of science diplomacy in fostering the global endeavours of science and scholarship, and supporting individuals pursuing research, often already under restricted conditions. We must not let war divide us. We therefore call on all universities, institutes, and academic institutions around the world to open their doors to students, researchers, and academics from Ukraine, and advocate for continued cooperation with Russian and Belarusian individual scholars sharing those values.

We will do our best to alleviate the negative implications of this war for the professional life of our members, and we are committed to assisting international students and scholars leaving zones of conflict in Ukraine. All refugees of war, independent of their passport and race, should receive protection, support and offers of humanitarian assistance. EPSA is currently working towards extending its Fellowship program to include researchers at any level of seniority who have been affected by the war. Opportunities for financial and institutional support will be announced on our website as soon as we confirm participation from potential hosting institutions. For suggestions or inquiries, please write to epsa@philsci.eu.

EJPS – Possible delays

The Editors-in-Chief have made the following announcement about the ongoing coronavirus situation:

EJPS will do its best in this period of crisis.
New Co-Editors-in-Chief of the European Journal for Philosophy of Science (EJPS)

Dear Members of the European Philosophy of Science Association,

It is a great pleasure to announce that Phyllis Illari and Federica Russo have been appointed as the new Co-Editors-in-Chief of the European Journal for Philosophy of Science (EJPS). Their 3-years term starts in July 2017.

Phyllis Illari received her PhD from King’s College London and is currently Senior Lecturer in Philosophy of Science in the Science and Technology Studies Department at University College London. Before UCL, she completed two postdoctoral projects at the University of Kent and at the University of Hertfordshire. Her current work is on mechanisms, causality, and information, and how they impact on evidence assessment in biomedical sciences.

Federica Russo received her PhD from the Université catholique de Louvain and is currently Assistant Professor in Philosophy of Science at the University of Amsterdam. Before that she held research, teaching, and visiting positions at several institutions, including the University of Kent and the University of Pittsburgh. Her current research has two main strands: causality and evidence in the social, biomedical, policy sciences, and the relations between science and technology.

Phyllis and Federica are already very experienced in the publishing business. They have worked together on several projects, including their co-authored volume Causality: Philosophical Theory Meets Scientific Practice (OUP, 2014) and co-edited (together with Jon Williamson) Causality in the Sciences (OUP, 2011). Federica is also an Associate Editor of the journals Philosophy and Technology and Topoi and serves on the editorial board of The Reasoner. In 2016, Federica was also an Associate Editor of the European Journal for Philosophy of Science, hence she knows our journal first hand. Phyllis is currently Associate Editor of the Springer journal Philosophy & Technology and Editor-in-Chief of The Philosophy of Information: A Simple Introduction (2012, 2013).

The European Journal for Philosophy of Science was founded in 2010 and the first issue appeared in 2011. The founding editors of the journal were Mauro Dorato and Carl Hoefer, and we cannot be thankful enough to Mauro and Carl for the truly excellent job they have done over the years. It is not easy to start a journal from scratch and to position it on a competitive market with several highly regarded journals. Federica and Phyllis will take over a well-regarded and established journal. Many thanks, Mauro and Carl!

I would also like to thank the other teams who applied for the Editorship-in-Chief. We received indeed several very strong applications, and the Steering Committee is very happy that there is so much support for EPSA and interest in running the journal in the EPSA community. Finally, I would like to thank Federica and Phyllis and wish them all the best for their term as Co-Editors-in-Chief of EJPS.

With best wishes, on behalf of the EPSA Steering Committee,

Stephan Hartmann

President, European Philosophy of Science Association

Alexander von Humboldt Professor, LMU Munich

Call for Nominations

In June 2017, the members of EPSA will elect a new President and four new regular members of the Steering Committee. The current Vice President and four other members of the Steering Committee will remain in office to guarantee continuity. For the first time in the history of EPSA, these elections will be conducted electronically.

To prepare for the elections, we are seeking nominations for the various offices. All EPSA members are invited to propose candidates for President and for regular Steering Committee members. Note that the research institute of the President hosts the EPSA office and takes care of the EPSA webpage. EPSA has only very limited (if any) resources to contribute to this. Before proposing candidates, make sure that the candidates are willing to run and that they are EPSA members. As EPSA would like to involve more women philosophers of science, the nomination of female candidates is especially encouraged. Nominations should be sent to the EPSA email-address: epsa@lrz.uni-muenchen.de. The deadline for nominations is 1 March 2017. The Nomination Committee will then come up with a list of up to three candidates for President and up to eight candidates for regular members of the Steering Committee. Members of previous Steering Committees (but not of the present one) can run again if they wish.

EPSA is a thriving learned society with the goal of promoting philosophy of science in Europe. To keep it thriving, it is important to have active and committed officers. We therefore urge all EPSA members to nominate suitable candidates.

The members of the Nomination Committee are Jeanne Peijnenburg (chair), Helen Beebee, Phyllis Illari, Theo Kuipers, and Marcel Weber.

EPSA19: Call for Venues

The European Philosophy of Science Association (EPSA) calls for proposals for the venue of EPSA19, its seventh conference, to be held in the autumn of 2019. The biennial conference is the main scientific event of EPSA, typically attracting 300-400 philosophers of science from across the world. It usually comprises 180 contributed and symposia talks, organized in as many as eight different sections, and taking place in five or six parallel sessions. A selection of the best talks is published as a volume in the new Springer series European Studies in Philosophy of Science (EJPS).

The conference is typically hosted by a philosophy of science unit, and its venue must be a recognized European academic or research institution. The event takes place in the autumn over a period of 3-4 days (which must include a Saturday) in alternating years to the conferences of the Philosophy of Science Association (PSA). Past conferences have taken place at Madrid (2007), Amsterdam (2009), Athens (2011), Helsinki (2013), and Düsseldorf (2015). EPSA17 will take place in Exeter, UK.

A Local Organizing Committee (LOC, typically comprising 5-6 people) is set up at the host institution – with a remit to organize the event itself. About one year in advance the Steering Committee (SC) of EPSA puts out a call for papers and selects a Program Committee (PC) comprising distinguished philosophers of science. The LOC, SC and PC are non-overlapping sets of people, with the exception of the Chairs of the LOC and PC, who may be drawn from the SC. The Chairs of the LOC and PC are also expected to act as joint editors of the conference volume.

Proposals (one PDF document) must be submitted to the President of the Association (Prof. Stephan Hartmann, email: epsa@lrz.uni-muenchen.de) by August 15, 2017 and must include the following:

The name of the organizing unit or research institution.

The name of the academic or research institute hosting the event.

The proposed dates in the autumn of 2019 (expected to be a long weekend from end of August to end of November of 2019).

The names of the members of the LOC, including Chair(s) and/or Deputy. Please note that the members of the LOC have to be EPSA members.

The CV of the Chair or the Chairs of the LOC.

An estimated budget proposal, including rough estimates for the following expenses: a) building and facilities, b) catering, c) conference registration packs (x 200 delegates minimum), d) personnel, e) expected finical contribution by the host institution and/or a funding agency.

The Steering Committee of the European Philosophy of Science Association (EPSA) seeks applications for the position of Editor-in-Chief of the European Journal for Philosophy of Science (EJPS). The editorship will be assumed on 1 July 2017 and is normally held for a renewable term of four years.

The European Journal for Philosophy of Science was founded in 2009 and the first issue was published in 2011. The journal currently publishes three issues per year. The Editor-in-Chief is responsible for selecting manuscripts for publication, supervising the editorial office, and coordinating the production of the journal with the publisher Springer. The Editor-in-Chief must hold a permanent academic appointment at a European University and have a distinguished research record in philosophy of science.

Applications for the Editor-in-Chief of the European Journal for Philosophy of Science should summarize the applicant’s qualifications for the editorship, present the proposed editorial team (currently the journal has two Editors-in-Chief and five Associate Editors, but other arrangements are also possible), and describe the likely institutional support, such as teaching relief, office space, and administrative assistance. Applications from outside of Europe are welcome, but at least half of the editorial team (i.e. Editors-in-Chief and Associate Editors) should have a position in Europe. If two Editors-in-Chief are proposed, at least one of them should have a permanent appointment at a European University. The application should also include the CVs of all members of the proposed editorial team. Please submit applications by e-mail attachment to the secretary of EPSA, Ms Maria Csauscher, at epsa@lrz.uni-muenchen.de. The deadline for applications is 1 September 2016. Questions concerning the application should be directed to the President of EPSA, Prof. Stephan Hartmann, at S.Hartmann@lmu.de.

Graduate Student Essay Prize has been awarded

The paper "Empirical problems for explanationism" by Rune Nyrup has been awarded the first Graduate Student Essay Prize of the European Philosophy of Science Association (EPSA). This prize is aimed at graduate students who had their papers accepted for presentation at the EPSA 2015 conference in Düsseldorf. It is expected to encourage early career scholars to pursue their research, and to highlight the quality and variety of philosophical work on science carried out within European academia. The submissions were blindly examined by the Graduate Student Essay Prize Committee appointed by the EPSA Steering Committee, which included Lilia Gurova, Sabina Leonelli, Bert Leuridan [chair] and David Teira. All the submissions were of high quality and represented different strands of philosophy of science. The decision was therefore difficult to reach, however the paper "Empirical problems for explanationism" was agreed by all committee members to deserve the award given the importance of its subject for philosophy of science, the originality of its claims, its clearly presented argument and its thorough grasp of the relevant literature. Rune Nyrups's paper challenges the existing empirical arguments for the view that good explanations of phenomena provide epistemic support for the underlying hypotheses. The winner will receive 500 EUR and the paper will be taken into consideration for publication in the EJPS.

Congratulations Rune!

Successful candidates will be put in touch with their future host institution and the details of the visit (exact dates, financial and accommodation arrangements, visa sponsorship, etc.) should be agreed directly been the candidates and their hosts (without involvement of EPSA). Local circumstances vary and no general commitments about levels of funding can be made.

Visits are approximately 1 month. For visits to Ghent the following conditions apply: the candidate must have obtained his/her PhD more than 2 years prior to the beginning of the visit. The visit to Ghent is at least one month, but the Centre offers the possibility of spending up to three months in Ghent if the applicant and the host institution consider that fruitful.

EPSA17: Call for Venues

The European Philosophy of Science Association (EPSA) calls for proposals for the venue of EPSA17, its sixth conference, to be held in the autumn of 2017.

Past conferences have taken place at Madrid (2007), Amsterdam (2009), Athens (2011), and Helsinki (2013). EPSA15 will take place in Düsseldorf, Germany.

Stephan Hartmann, email: epsa@lrz.uni-muenchen.de) by August 15, 2015 and must include the following:

The name of the organizing unit or research institution.

The name of the academic or research institute hosting the event.

The proposed dates in the autumn of 2015 (expected to be a long weekend from end of August to end of November of 2017).
