EUROPEAN PHILOSOPHY OF SCIENCE ASSOCIATION

Mathias Frisch

Mathias is running for the office of Treasurer.

Biography

I am a professor of philosophy at Leibniz University Hannover.  Before returning to Europe in 2016 I taught at the University of Maryland (2003-2016) and Northwestern University (1998-2003). My research interests include philosophy of climate science, philosophy of physics, and general philosophy of science (in particular issues concerning causation and explanation, and models and representation). I am the author of two books, published by Oxford University Press and Cambridge University Press, respectively, and of over forty articles. I currently serve as an associate editor of the European Journal for Philosophy of Science.

Candidate Statement

I have been closely involved with EPSA since its founding conference in Madrid and was a member of the programme committee for the 2013 EPSA biennial meeting in Helsinki. In the last decade our biennial conferences have evolved into an equally important counterweight to the North American PSA meetings and EPSA has developed into a flourishing professional organization with an increasingly broad membership base. If elected, I would focus especially on the following issues: (i) further expanding membership and encouraging the participation of underrepresented groups; (iii) increasing thematic diversity; and (iii) promoting forms of public engagement and public outreach, in particular with respect to pressing issues of high social and political relevance, such as climate change or artificial intelligence.
